US Global Dominance is Doomed
November 22, 2008 by Jose Luis Morales · Leave a Comment

The National Intelligence Council (NIC) predicts China, India and Russia will increasingly challenge US influence.
It also says the dollar may no longer be the world’s major currency, and food and water shortages will fuel conflict.
However, the report concedes that these outcomes are not inevitable and will depend on the actions of world leaders.
It will make sombre reading for President-elect Barack Obama, the BBC’s Jonathan Beale in Washington says, as it paints a bleak picture of the future of US influence and power.
“The next 20 years of transition to a new system are fraught with risks,” says Global Trends 2025, the latest of the reports that the NIC prepares every four years in time for the next presidential term.
Washington will retain its considerable military advantages, but scientific and technological advances; the use of “irregular warfare tactics”; the proliferation of long-range precision weapons; and the growing use of cyber warfare “increasingly will constrict US freedom of action”, it adds.
Nevertheless, the report concludes: “The US will remain the single most important actor but will be less dominant.”

Bone Marrow Transplant Cures Man of HIV
November 14, 2008 by Jose Luis Morales · 1 Comment
Doctors in Germany have stated a man with leukemia and HIV has shown no sign of either disease since a bone marrow transplant two years ago.
According to BBC, the researchers in Berlin said the donor had a genetic resistance to HIV, and the result may raise interest in gene therapy for HIV patients. However, the

researchers also said this was an unusual case that required further investigation.
“This is an interesting case for research,” Professor Rodolf Tauber from the Charite clinic said in a statement, reported BBC. “But to promise to millions of people infected with HIV that there is hope of a cure would not be right.”
However, Sewell added, “The problem is most people with HIV live in sub-Saharan Africa and this is hugely expensive, you have to find a matched donor, and it’s a pretty
severe and painful operation. So it’s going to be an option for very few people.”

stronomers using NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope have taken the first visible-light snapshot of a planet orbiting another star. The images show the planet, named Fomalhaut b, as a tiny point source of light orbiting the nearby, bright southern star Fomalhaut, located 25 light-years away in the constellation Piscis Australis. An immense debris disk about 21.5 billion miles across surrounds the star. Fomalhaut b is orbiting 1.8 billion miles inside the disk’s sharp inner edge.

Employees Expose FOX NEWS’ Distortions
November 1, 2008 by Jose Luis Morales · 3 Comments
As Rupert Murdoch’s ‘war on journalism’ hits new lows, droves of disgruntled employees are confessing their many misdeeds, brought upon by the Soviet-Union-esque environment they faced at FOX News. Watch how FOX executives dictate their bias by forcing reporters to follow memos that predetermine what they can say and how they should say it.
Rupert Murdoch has decided that the best approach to journalism is to parade opinions dressed-up as News. The reason is simple: No one can disprove an opinion, and therefore, credibility is easier to maintain. Should they ever be caught lying, the legal process affords them protection under the First Amendment. We also have Congress to thank for the bright idea of passing a rider Bill (hidden) to deregulate the News Media.
That’s right; Corporate News entities can tell lies and distort the news as they please, and it’s all perfectly legal.
To the best of my knowledge, no country can have or maintain democracy without an honest Press or, at least, one that can be held accountable. But where is ours?
